Does Acupuncture Hurt? So how does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is a very old form of Chinese therapy which involves the insertion of needles in the body to promote healing. Acupuncture needles are very fine and come in different diameter gauges and lengths. In areas where bones can easily be palpated e.g. the wrist or face, a small needle is inserted, but in areas of larger musculature e.g. the back or thigh, larger needles are chosen
Since acupuncture needles are very fine, they do not usually hurt upon insertion, and even if they do, the sensation subsides within seconds. This is hard for most people to imagine as they have only ever had the hypodermic needle for receiving shots or donating blood. The hypodermic needle is much larger in diameter as it has to puncture a vein to draw blood or for injecting the medicine. So acupuncture needle insertion is not usually painful. Sometimes, patients may be overly anxious about receiving acupuncture or they may have a very acute muscular spasm and in such cases, the patient may find the needle insertion to be more sensitive. In such cases, I remind the patients to invoke their deep, diaphragmatic breath work, and they find the treatment extremely relaxing.
How does the insertion of needles in the body help promote healing?
Traditionally, in Chinese Medicine Acupuncture theory, there are many channels or meridians that carry Qi energy and these channels are connected to internal organs as well. By inserting a needle along the channel, the flow of energy and blood can be improved so that any imbalance can be arrested or reversed. For example, if there is an area of stagnation such as a muscular spasm, the improved qi flow will disperse the stagnation from the area and help the muscle to relax. Similarly, if a build-up of stress causes the mind not to relax and leads to insomnia, acupuncture can help in dispersing the tension, relaxing the mind, and improving the quality of sleep.
In terms of Modern Medicine, acupuncture points are often located near nerve endings within the body. When a needle is inserted into one of these acupuncture points, it stimulates the nerve, causing the release of neurotransmitters, which are special chemicals that the body produces to communicate with cells in the body. Endorphin, the body’s natural painkiller, is released causing a reduction in pain perception. It has also been shown that acupuncture causes a rise in Serotonin and Histamine levels, which are important to promote the healing response. As such, when treating a painful condition, the goals of treatment include pain relief, a reduction in inflammation within the tissue, increased circulation to the region, and the promotion of healing.
Facial Acupuncture Therapy
Facial Acupuncture treatment will cover three techniques, which are Facial Guasha, Facial Acupuncture, and Ear seed therapy. A facial treatment can improve blood and lymph fluid circulation on your face, and prevent collagen from declining, even further reduce wrinkles, dark spots, and increase the structural integrity of the skin. It also is able to stimulate our body's production of collagen to lift and firm our skin. Contraindications: To the patients who are taking blood-thinning medications, or other cosmetic facial injections in the past 6 months.
